Julia Earley Unit 2 Cover Letter
Project Description The question for this unit was, “What is the *best* week-long four-person road trip you can design to fit a $1000 per-person budget?” We were put into a group of 3 people, then had to pick a destination and find the costs to go and stay at that destination, eat, drive around, stay in a hotel or camp, then come back. We chose San Francisco for our city because of its exciting art, flavorful food, and beautiful landscapes. Costs Of course, we used math and logic to find our costs for amenities. We started by finding the cost of our food for the trip. We had a little bit of trouble finding the equation to use for our food, but we concluded 4(28.46R+((7-R) 24.37) put an explanation for equation here After finding the equation for food, we still needed one for the hotel and the flight. So next, I took on the flight cost. I looked up the cost per mile in San Francisco for a taxi and decided 10 dollars was about how much we would spend on taxis every day. We were staying there for six days, so the total cost for taxis is 60 dollars. Next, I looked up how much it costs to go from the airport to the hotel, multiplied that by two, ( from airport to hotel, then hotel to airport ) and got 33.25. Next, I looked up the cost to fly back and forth from Durango to San Francisco, then multiplied that by 4 ( how many people are in our group ) to get 1596 dollars. I added that all together to get a total of 1689.25$ for transportation for the whole trip. Lastly, we need to figure out the hotel. We picked a hotel that costs 200 dollars a night, that we could all share a room in, then multiplied that by 6, ( how many nights we stayed ) and got 1400$ Why and How We Made These Decisions We chose our locations and food prices based on logic. We picked what we thought would make the most sense, and what seemed most enjoyable to us. Extension Question If I were to make a project similar to this one, I would create a problem where you have to move anywhere in the world. The costs would include a one-way flight or another form of transportation to that place, then the costs of renting ( for 12 months ) or buying a house. I would give a budget of 100-300 thousand dollars. Reflections First reflection I would say I am a 5 in writing algebraic expressions. I can quickly process and solve them and translate real-world problems into them. I’m comfortable at this level. So far, in this unit, I’m most proud of how my POW turned out. Second Reflection I’ve done well with communication and helping my peers with math this unit. I have taken on multiple extension questions this project to further my learning; nothing has gotten in my way. Third Reflection Out of all the presentations today, my favorite was the Seattle one, because Seattle is my favorite city in America. I’m personally proud of all the equations that we as a group created. In particular, our food cost. But, I would’ve taken more time to draw our title on our poster. We had excellent communication, but my team members and I all missed quite a few days. We got through it by communicating about missed work. I think this was a good strategy. Personal Reflection How have you grown as a mathematician in this unit? This unit, I’ve grown by taking extension work, doing work in advance, and helping others with their math work. I love the work I do in math, and always try to refine it to the best of my abilities to create beautiful work. Because of this unit, I can now quickly translate real-world problems into algebraic expressions. |
